Texas Dragon/ Lion Dance Team
A performance-driven lion dance group based in Austin, Texas, their goal is to share and in many cases introduce the art of lion dancing to the community. As one of the few teams in Central Texas that performs year-round, for a wide variety of events, they have performed for elementary schools, cultural events, festivals, restaurants, and weddings.Their prime performance season is during the Lunar New Year (early February or March) where they perform the guantlet of back-to-back performances for businesses and organizations all over Austin.
Ed Miller
A native of Edinburgh, Ed Miller first came to the USA for “a year or so” to do graduate work at the University of Texas. Now, over 30 years later, he is still based in Austin and travels throughout North America entertaining and educating audiences with his wonderful songs and droll stories. Although he did gain a PhD in Folklore from UT, and still hosts a popular folk music show on KUT-FM, he has moved from university life to being a fulltime performer. Over the past 25 years, he has established himself as one of Scotland’s finest singing exports, and is in great demand to perform at concerts, folk clubs, coffeehouses, Celtic festivals, Burns Suppers and Highland Games all over the country.
The Love of China School of Dance
This incredible dance ensemble has performed at countless cultural events, always in front of packed theaters. The group has collaborated with Splendid China, a nationally-renowned dance troupe from China, and has sponsored performances of dancers from Taiwan. The school in Austin is committed to serving the Chinese community in Austin by maintaining the cultural heritage and introducing Chinese folk dance to a wider audience through public performances.
Bereket: The University of Texas Middle Eastern Ensemble
The University of Texas Middle Eastern Ensemble "Bereket" is a group comprised of UT students, faculty, staff and community members. "Bereket" is a word with cognates in Turkish, Arabic and Persian that translates as "abundance", "fruitfulness", and "divine gift". About half of our members are from the Middle East, and all are interested in learning about the culture, history, religions and languages from these areas.
St. Edward's University Ballet Folklorico
One of the group’s main goals is to share the richness of the Mexican culture through the traditional dances of ballet folklorico. Throughout the year, the group does this by performing on campus, in the local Austin community and other cities in Texas. Once a year, the group takes this mission of cultural dissemination a bit further by venturing into parts of the United States that don’t often see the beauty and majesty of ballet folklorico.
